Ulf Hillstedt
Practice Lead MU Construction | MU Sweden
I am honoured to take on the role of Practice Lead for the Construction Practice at Mercuri Urval (MU). It is a moment in my career that allows me to intensify my commitment to nurturing talent, support and develop leaders and teams, and contributing to a better society through the power of solid and good leadership.
My career has always revolved around curiosity, especially people, and recognising that high performing organisations starts at the top and permeates throughout the organisation. This is an unbeatable opportunity to focus more than ever on a sector I love working with. And working at MU offers me a unique opportunity to combine my passion for facts, analysis, strategy and science.
Changing Career After 25 Years
After 25 exciting years in the market research industry, I strived for doing something new, becoming a leader within a completely new business-to-business sector, within the traditional industry. I met a number of recruitment companies and there was only one match for me – MU was clearly state-of-the-art, way ahead all competitors.
To me it is important that the MU way of working is based on scientific knowledge and facts. For me it is essential to be able to deliver reliable leadership advice, over time. The approach is based on precisely tailored services and not standard solutions i.e. one size fits all-concept. MU knows that you must know the unique circumstances of an
organisation and its result needs, as well as the specific requirements on the leader. Highest standard of quality and ethics has always been important for me, and it is so obvious that all people and the culture stand for this.
MU has given me the opportunity to delve into how people and organisations works and evolves, which I find both stimulating and meaningful. I have learned how to assess how well an individual will be able to deliver future results in a specific role. I have learned how to best get the extra potential that you can see. Regardless of whether it is a leader, a team or a company. The tool is a masterpiece – Mercuri Urval Personal Inventory.
I feel great pride in belonging to an internationally leading leadership advisory firm with deep Swedish roots and values. Take, for example, showing respect for other people - and to cooperate and collaborate. It is so much more than just nice words. It permeates everything we do. It is especially important in a time when people question and downgrade those types of values and ways of working.
The fact that the Mercuri Urval Foundation is behind it, that the MU Research Institute (MURI) exists, is like the jewel in the crown for me.
Highlights From a Long Career in the Industry
I have a lot of things that I am proud of in my career, and it is difficult to choose something that stands out.
But one significant highlight I am probably most proud over is when I followed my heart and started working at MU. It was not about anything else than the desire to focus on things that truly matters. To work with leadership challenges, developing people and having impact in that perspective. The joy of someone else’s smile, when happiness radiates from the eyes and the body signals pure pride in having achieved something great. It evokes happiness in me. For me, it is in the small moments that I find the highlights. These are the ones that I remember best and am most proud of. At MU, I have the best tools, colleagues and clients to be able to experience that often.
Committed to Driving Change and Innovation
My focus right now is to listen, ask questions, trying to understand how things are connected and then actively contribute and ensure that MU delivers the best knowledge and solutions within Executive Search and Leadership Advisory to our customers in the construction & building materials industry.
In today's situation with the prevailing uncertainty, it is simply a hygiene requirement to take leadership issues seriously. Securing effective and good leadership is perhaps the biggest challenges organisations (and countries) face.
I hope to be able to clearly contribute to future success, for many clients, companies, leaders and experts and for MU.
