Ane Storhaug Grøndahl

Group Director | MU Norway

This appointment to Group Director means a great deal to me, both personally and professionally. When I joined MU in 2019, this was one of the two major goals I set for myself, so reaching this milestone feels significant. Professionally, it means even more because I have viewed MU as the gold standard in this industry for the past 18 years. To be recognised in this way tells me that I have contributed in the right ways — by building trust, creating results, developing clients, supporting colleagues, and staying persistent over time. What matters most to me now is not the title itself, but the increased expectations that come with it: the opportunity to contribute more to the development of our people, our clients, and MU as a company in Norway and beyond.

Why MU continues to be the right place for me

I joined MU because of its reputation, its legacy, and the seriousness of its professional foundation. Long before I became part of the company, I saw MU as a benchmark in the industry — not only because of the brand itself, but because of how consistently it has combined deep expertise with the ability to renew and stay relevant over time. That matters to me.

What keeps me here is both what we stand for and how we work. MU is science-based, client-close, and focused on creating real value through recruitment, assessment, and coaching. I find a lot of meaning in being part of a company where our knowledge and expertise genuinely help clients make better leadership decisions. Just as importantly, I work with highly capable colleagues, and I enjoy the fact that we solve demanding challenges together. The combination of high standards, strong collaboration, and real client impact gives me energy.

What feels especially distinctive about MU is that we continue to build on what we fundamentally believe in, while also preparing actively for what is changing in our industry. We are clear about our identity, but we are equally clear about where we are going. I appreciate that balance. If I were to connect this to one of our Employee Value Propositions, it would be Built to Last. I believe deeply in long-term value creation, long-term relationships, and in committing fully when you believe in something. When there are trust, shared direction, and real commitment, remarkable things can happen.

Defining moments that have shaped my career

Several moments stand out in my career, but what I am proudest of is not only achievement in the traditional sense — it is the combination of performance, growth, and perspective. Early in my career, I became the youngest partner ever at a previous employer and played a central role in a nine-year transformation of that recruitment business. That experience taught me a great deal about growth, resilience, and what it takes to build something over time.

Another highlight has been developing client relationships at MU from single assignments into national or Nordic accounts that create opportunities for several colleagues across the business. For me, that is one of the most satisfying forms of success: when client trust grows into broader partnerships that benefit both the client and the team around me.

One of the most important chapters in my career, however, came when I chose to leave the industry after nine years and work in the public sector for two years supporting people on long-term sick leave in their return to work. It was a radical shift. I halved my salary, changed my daily reality completely, and stepped into work that was entirely centred on what I could do for others. It was a formative experience that gave me perspective, humility in the truest sense of the word, and a much deeper understanding of why I value this profession. Returning to the industry through MU felt like getting back on the horse — with more clarity, more maturity, and even stronger motivation.

Creating clarity in high-stakes leadership decisions

One recent assignment that stands out is a project for Ø.M. Fjeld, a privately owned construction company with an 80-year history. The client was preparing to appoint a new Group CEO and wanted to assess three internal candidates. This was a particularly important and sensitive process because senior appointments of this kind are rare for them, a previous appointment had not worked out, and they had been relying on an interim solution since the summer of 2026. They had also used another firm in the past and felt they had received poor advice, so trust and clarity were essential from the outset.

Our role was to assess the three candidates and provide clear, evidence-based advice. We evaluated each candidate and gave a direct recommendation framework: recommended for hire, hire with support, and do not hire. We also helped the client think through the wider implications of choosing an internal versus external candidate, including the risks on both sides.

I was the client responsible and project leader for the assignment. What made the project successful was our ability to give the client perspectives they had not fully articulated themselves, while also naming some of the risks and dilemmas they had sensed but not yet addressed openly. The outcome was not just a hiring recommendation — it was greater clarity. The client became much more confident about what was truly important to base the decision on, and what was simply noise. For me, this was also a good reminder that the insight we take for granted as specialists is often exactly the value the client needs most.
